You may not know it but your are sabotaging your life, work, pleasure, and future. Read what it is that you do to yourself and why it matters.

Ask anyone their thoughts on how to double, triple, or even quadruple your income in the New Year and you’d surely find answers like: “get more leads” or “create new products and services” or “sell more.”

All correct answers by the way. But why are so few able to simply do these things year after year? Why will this time next year, for many, look and feel almost identical to the way it looks at the end of this year, with very little income change?

The answer may surprise you. And it’s the reason so few accomplish what they set out to when a New Year begins. It’s the reason so many get derailed from their New Year resolutions or their New Year goals, usually within only a few short weeks. It’s THE reason so many business fail, so fast.

The answer is: “Distraction.”

It’s the silent business killer. Like cancer in the body, Distraction slowly, quietly creeps up on us, day in and day out, and ever so discreetly takes us further and further away from what’s really important. And to make matters worse, we are now in the “Distraction Age” with more connected technology and gadgets than EVER before to take our eye off the ball. But only if you let it. Like cancer, Distraction can be prevented and fought. But only by the proactive…

So how does one proactively fight Distraction?

Today, as we near the end of 2011, I’ll give your three powerful tips to do it so you can put yourself in a position to double, even triple your income in 2012:

1) Make a list of all the devices you use throughout the day that are “turned on” and able to interrupt you from your “revenue producing” work. Ex: cell phone, email, instant message, facebook, etc. Just write down what is “turned on” throughout your day. Do this right now before going to #2. I’ll wait right here.

2) Choose one to two “one hour” blocks of time throughout your day where you turn ALL of it off. OFF. Maybe an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. Maybe only for an hour in the morning to start. But OFF. Now work, really work and focus on “one thing” during this block of time (or two) where all Distractions are silenced from your personal productivity space. One hour only, then you can go crazy and turn it all back on again. You’re off the hook.

3) Now, for the difficult accountability part that most will never do (which is why most will be no further ahead next year), track this daily “in writing.” Grab a journal. I call it a Personal Productivity Journal. At the end of each day, write down your results. Did you block out the time(s) today to work Distraction Free? If yes, write it in, if no, write it in. Now check your results at the end of the week. How did you do?

The big question is…

Would YOU want to work for you? Or should you fire yourself? The answer is right in front of you. Anyone who can’t discipline themselves to work Distraction Free for only one to two hours “per day” is in trouble. However, those who will, benefit BIG and eventually build off this and work Distraction Free for even more than one or two hours each day. Just so you know, those are the top 2% of income earners in the world.

IF you’re tough enough to do this, and track it, you will double (maybe even triple) your weekly productivity which, very often, translates to an equal increase in cash flow.”

Andrew Cass

If you are an internet marketer you can learn how to deal with your little and your big issues.

(Updated) Ever wish you could mainline your coffee? Well, here’s the next best thing: AeroShot, a new product that delivers “inhalable” caffeinated puffs, and has got productivity-obsessed technophiles buzzing.
AeroShot’s delivery system is a light, plastic inhaler that shoots lime-flavored puffs of powdered caffeine to the tongue, where they are instantly absorbed. Each inhaler contains three puffs, providing a total of 100 mg of caffeine — about as much as in a large cup of coffee.

The product also contains 100% of the recommended daily allowance of niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. It’s sweetened with stevia, an herbal sweetener that is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar and has no calories.

AeroShot was invented by Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, who previously created a no-calorie inhalable chocolate product called Le Whif. “I have a background in developing inhaled drugs and vaccines and I was fascinated about bringing that idea to a new way of eating,” says Edwards. “That’s how it began.”
MORE: No Taste, Not Filling

It took me a few tries to get the hang of using the inhaler (best to read the directions first and not to use it upside down!), but soon I got a dose of seriously sweet lime flavor and found my heart rate and mood lifted in that familiar, caffeinated way — but faster than with coffee. The dosing seemed slightly inexact — sometimes, the inhaler doesn’t load the powder quite right — but when it worked, the effect was rapid.

“Frequently, the first time people do it, they laugh,” says Edwards. “There’s something funny about the act, how it happens in your mouth.”

Since caffeine is a legal substance in foods, as are the included B vitamins, AeroShot did not require FDA approval. It will be sold as an energy supplement. The label says it is “not intended for people under 12, sensitive to caffeine, allergic to ragweed, taking medications, who are pregnant or who have a serious medical condition.” It also warns against using more than three AeroShots a day.

So, what’s the best and safest way to use caffeine? And does it really improve performance?

A 2010 Cochrane review of multiple studies of caffeine’s effect on shift workers found that it did indeed reduce the number of errors people made in tasks like driving or operating a flight simulator. It also improved memory, reasoning, perception and attention, compared with placebo. Sadly for us writers, however, caffeine did not seem to affect verbal functioning or language skills, at least in the studies included in the review.

Other research suggests that frequent dosing, with about 20 mg of caffeine an hour, is an efficient way to counter the effects of sleep deprivation and improve brain processing speed. If you’re using coffee, adding sugar may also help: one study found that it boosted performance more than caffeine alone.

As for the overall health effects of caffeine and coffee, that’s been debated for years. On balance, the research seems to find more benefits than harms associated with drinking coffee, including reduced risks of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and depression.

MORE: Coffee May Lower Women’s Risk of Depression

Is caffeine addictive? Certainly, it produces tolerance and withdrawal symptoms if it is stopped abruptly. But even though it is the most widely used drug in the world, few caffeine users exhibit signs of serious addiction — namely, compulsive drug-related behaviors despite negative consequences. That could be in part because caffeine is legal and easily and cheaply obtained. Or, it could be because the effects of caffeine use — especially in a hyperefficient society — are generally positive.

So, while previous products, like inhalable aerosolized alcohol, led to bans in multiple states, AeroShot seems more likely to garner praise (especially from employers — and editors).

The new product will hit stores in New York City and Boston in January and will be available online in several weeks, according to Edwards. The retail price is expected to be $2.99 per inhaler — cheaper than a Starbucks latte.

Who doesn’t want to be a deity? Especially a deity of Microsoft Windows, joining Bill Gates and Paul Allen in an unholy pantheon of digital excess?

Well, I can’t quite make that happen, but I can at least show you how to get a little more control over Windows 7, through the use of a trick which CNET revealed this week, a little shortcut known as “God Mode” or “GodMode.”

The setup method is simple, if bizarre: Make a new folder in Windows 7 (anywhere) and give it this name exactly:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Now open that folder. Instead of an empty directory you’ll find a control panel interface giving you instant access to dozens of tweaks you can make to your operating system environment. It’s a little like the old TweakUI, an essential add-on for Windows XP, and it gives power users a quicker and easier way to make more than 100 common customizations to their system, from tweaking the way User Account Control works to running an antivirus application to even changing how frequently the cursor blinks.

It’s actually pretty handy, and the beauty is that you can put the GodMode folder anywhere (or have multiple copies) and it will work exactly the same way. Be warned however that some users are reporting instability on 64-bit Windows 7 installations. (I’m running it on a 32-bit edition of Windows 7 Ultimate and it’s working great.)

Check it out!

I Didn’t See It Coming

Amy Dorn Kopelan

Bedlam Entertainment, Inc.

ven the most secure-seeming job is never completely safe. Changes in a company’s direction… petty office politics… a strained relationship with one’s boss… or any of a host of other factors can cost even the most competent worker his/her job.

Amy Dorn Kopelan lost her position as head of morning programming at ABC in 1995, when Capital Cities Communications acquired the network. She had thought her job was safe because of the high ratings of the morning programs. She failed to consider that Capital Cities already had a skilled morning programmer and had no need for two.

Kopelan, along with two other high-powered executives who lost their jobs, decided to write a book on warning signs of workplace trouble. Here are six career-threatening events and what to do about them…

1. Your company merges or is acquired. Top-performing employees often assume they will survive the layoffs that follow a merger or acquisition, but an entire division might be eliminated, taking the stars out the door along with everyone else… or the acquiring company might already have someone in your role. Do not feel completely secure even if your boss “guarantees” you that your job is safe — in the new company, your boss might not have the power to make the final decision.

What to do: Consider how your skills and talents could be applied elsewhere in your organization, and discuss this with executives in those divisions. This increases your odds of finding a safe haven should your current division or position be eliminated. Also prepare an exit strategy.

2. Your boss loses power. If your boss falls out of favor with the company’s top brass, his career is not the only one at risk — yours could be threatened as well. Your whole department might be viewed negatively, stalling the careers of all assigned to it… your boss’s favorable opinion of you will carry little weight, making it harder for you to advance… and your boss’s fall from grace could mean a new boss will soon take over, which can create its own problems.

Signs a boss is losing power…

His demands become uncharacteristically unrealistic as the pressure to produce forces him to ask the impossible of underlings.

A consultant is brought in to study your department.

The departmental budget is slashed.

Your boss suddenly has trouble getting access to top executives.

What to do: The safest strategy is to attempt to transfer to a different department with a more highly regarded leader. The more aggressive strategy is to put yourself forward for your boss’s job. You could talk to a division head you know or someone you have befriended in human resources to decide how best to go about this. Attempt it only if you have specific ideas for improving the department and a track record that suggests that such a promotion is merited.

3. You get a new boss. It is not enough to show your new boss that you are intelligent and hardworking. To ensure that your career remains on course, you also must match your style to that of your boss. Does he like to receive daily e-mails from people who report to him or just the occasional verbal update? Does he encourage an informal atmosphere or a buttoned-down workplace? Does he like hard-driving go-getters or easygoing team players?

What to do: New bosses often form lasting opinions of their employees within minutes of meeting them, so it is best to get the answers to these questions before the boss walks through the door. As soon as you learn your new boss’s name, start tracking down employees, clients and colleagues from his previous positions who can fill you in. Be aware that word might get back to the new boss, so frame your queries in a very positive way.

Example: “I’m really excited about working with John and want to make a good impression. What can you tell me about him?”

4. A coach is brought in. If your employer hires a coach to help you improve your communications or conflict-resolution skills, the appropriate response is to fear for your job. These coaches typically are hired to spend time with executives whom companies intend to fire. A report from an outside coach stating that an executive was unwilling or unable to address his serious communication problems will make it more difficult for this executive to sue the company for wrongful termination later.

What to do: Listen to the coach, and implement his advice even if you consider it silly or unnecessary. Your company might have hired this coach to push you out the door, but if you show improvement and maintain a positive attitude, management might let you keep your job.

Exception: Consider it a very positive sign if a coach is hired to help you with your marketing skills. Marketing skills coaches generally are hired when companies think an executive has excellent ideas but needs to learn how to present them better. (If you are not sure whether a coach hired to work with you is a positive or negative omen, find out which department is paying the coach’s bill. Your career could be in danger if it is the human resources department.)

5. You remind your boss of someone he is/was fond of. It can seem like a huge career boost when a boss takes a liking to you based on a perceived similarity with someone else, such as a son or daughter, spouse, protégé or even himself at your age.

In the long run, however, this is more likely to harm your career than help it. Your colleagues could come to resent your seemingly undeserved special treatment, making it difficult for you to work with them. Or your boss could start to base his evaluations of you on the abilities and actions of someone else, taking your future out of your control and possibly hindering your career.

What to do: Consider whether there is something in particular about your behavior or appearance that triggers the association with this other individual. Take steps to alter this similarity. Example: If your boss treats you like a son and you find yourself being deferential toward him, reposition yourself. Say something like, “I’ve been thinking about what we discussed last week, and I have a very different approach.” Also…

Establish boundaries if the boss seems to be trying to get too close. If you are asked to join the boss for drinks or dinner more often than your colleagues, thank him for the invitation but say that you have previous plans.

Keep your colleagues on your side by standing up for their interests with the boss.

6. You are promoted ahead of your peers. Being promoted in your department bodes very well for your future — but if mishandled, it could derail your career. Some of your colleagues will resent you for getting the promotion that they had hoped for. Others might have trouble treating a former equal as the boss. If you cannot convince the entire team to treat you with respect, you lose effectiveness as a manager and your career could stall.

What to do: Do not celebrate your promotion in front of your colleagues. This will only deepen any animosities. Also…

Meet with each member of your new team one-on-one, and reassure each individual that you respect his talents.

Let team members take the glory when your team has success. You should claim credit primarily for leading your troops.

If any member of your group cannot adjust to your new role, try to find the person another position elsewhere in the company.

EXIT STRATEGY

It is important to prepare an “exit strategy” if you think your job might be on the line. Network with others in your industry… update your résumé … contact headhunters… and try to quickly acquire any important skills that you lack. This way, you’re all set to look for a job if you need to — and you might even land a position before you are let go.
